Cat with 28 Toes Ties World Record for Cat with the Most Toes

Most kitties have 20 furry, little toes — affectionately called “toe beans” by many cat fanatics — but for Paws the cat, that wasn’t enough.

The Northfield, Minnesota feline has 28 furry digits between her four paws. And if that sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. According to CBS News, she is tied for the most toes on one kitty. The cat who currently holds the Guinness World Record for Cat with the Most Toes also has 28.

All of Paws’ extra nubs are due to polydactyly, a congenital physical anomaly that causes felines (humans and dogs too!) to grow extra digits. Polydactyl cats are often called Hemingway cats, a nod to the extra-toed kitty the author kept at his home in Key West, Florida.

Paws’ eight extra toes are spread across her four feet, with three bonus toes on each front paw and one extra on each back paw.

“It almost looks like a catcher’s mitt,” Paws’ owner, Jeanne Martin, told CBS News.

This “gloved” paw comes in handy when Paws needs to grip onto narrow surfaces.

Extra toes also means extra nails to clip too, but Martin says this isn’t a problem since her vet trims the eight bonus digits pro bono.
