It all started with a handwritten note left in Carol Jordan’s mailbox. She told CBS News her first thought upon seeing the card from USPS was, “What did the boys do now?”

The 6-year-old “boys” are brothers, Bear and Bull. They were adopted by Jordan from a high-kill shelter in North Carolina when they were tiny pups.

Once she read the short message, Jordan realized the mail carrier was not angry, but concerned for the dogs’ health.

“Hey! I drove up to deliver a package and both of the dogs crawled in my truck” the message read. “They got into my lunch and ate an egg and some carrots and pumpkin seeds. I don’t know if that will upset their tummies, just FYI!”

“We would never have known,” Jordan said. “They always look guilty of something!”

Although pleased the mail carrier was willing to forgive and forget, Jordan felt the dogs should be held accountable for their transgression. She posted a snapshot of the note – along with a photo of Bear and Bull looking quite contrite – to Facebook with the caption, “Wall of shame #weoweyoulunch”.

To her amazement, the post went viral, with likes, shares and comments from dog lovers as far as Denmark, Australia and New Zealand.

“Most people thank us for making them laugh,” Jordan told CBS. “A lot of folks have made comments along the lines of ‘that’s like my dog’ or they tag someone whose dog would act like that.”

In an effort to smooth things over with the mail carrier, Bear and Bull – with the help of their mom – purchased a $20 Subway gift card and penned an apology note which they delivered to the Post Office.

“Sorry we ate your lunch,” read the note. “Thank you for sharing… P.S. Our humans said thank you for leaving a note. We didn’t like the note, we got in trouble.”

Let’s hope she remembers to eat her footlong before delivering mail to the Jordan house!

The apology post recieved another huge response from the online community – so big, in fact, that Jordan decided to create a separate Facebook page devoted to Bear and Bull’s antics.

The mischievous brothers are blissfully unaware of their newfound fame – something Jordan is grateful for, saying the notoriety would surely go to their heads!
