Shelter Receives Heartbreaking Letter From Senior Dog’s Owner

Taking in a senior pooch like Shell is not uncommon for the folks at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, but nothing could have prepared them for the heartwrenching note that came with her.

“Dear Stray Rescue,” it begins. “I am writing you cause I need you to take my dog, Shell…I’ve been fighting cancer for a few months and if you’re reading this I lost my battle.”

The letter goes on to explain that Shell was adopted from Stray Rescue in 2009 or 2010 by the unidentified author’s mother. When she passed away in 2012, the author took the little dog in and promptly fell in love with her.

Sadly, she, too, has since passed away, leaving Shell to mourn the loss of yet another loving owner. Stray Rescue shared the sad story with their Facebook followers, hoping to find Shell a new home.

They came through in a big way, sharing the post nearly 2,000 times. Several even inquired about adopting her.

Just three days after her story appeared on Facebook, Stray Rescue announced the sweet dog that “loves to cuddle, but not be carried” has been adopted!

Shell’s new mom lost her previous Stray Rescue pooch this summer. When she saw a news segment about Shell, she felt compelled to give her the loving, stable home all dogs deserve. According to the rescue’s Facebook update:

“She just felt so drawn to her. Wasting no time, she filled out an application and was here the very next morning. The two of them hit it off and she knew it was definitely the right time. She says Shell is already running the house, and that they are inseparable. We are honored to have fulfilled the final wish of her Mom, who is no longer with us. We promise she will be spoiled for the rest of her life.”

We wish Shell and her new mom many years of love and happiness!
