89-Year-Old Woman Has Knitted 450 Blankets & Sweaters For Shelter Dogs

Shelter volunteers come in many forms. Some walk dogs, others help match adopters with the perfect pet, and some – like Maisie Green – use their talents to provide a little extra comfort to animals in need.

At 89-years-young, Maisie has managed to knit approximately 450 cozy blankets and sweaters for the pups awaiting forever homes at the Dogs Trust Basildon shelter.

“I love knitting and I love dogs, so this combines both wonderfully,” Maisie told the Basildon Standard. “It takes me three days to knit a blanket and one day to knit a doggy coat.”

The generous senior donates her knitted creations to the shelter three times a year. Her family drives her there and helps unload each batch of sweaters and blankets. Dogs like “Daniel the Spaniel” have been among the lucky recipients of knitted items donated to Dogs Trust over the years.

“It keeps me busy and often I like to knit whilst watching television,” Maisie said. “I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents at the centre in some way.”

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity with 20 Rehoming Centres across the UK and Ireland. They care for over 16,000 stray, unwanted and abandoned dogs each year.
